Three day traditional community religious rite.
A bear was formally sacrificed in every cotan but a Japanese law farbate it in 1790. The bear was shot with arrows, then clubbed and finally throttled to death between tow logs.--in a ritual dismissal of him.... not cruel. Dispatching the bear was a kind act since his spirit will go to the world of bear spirits, a happy place for him. He carries messages nd gifts to the bear spirits already there.
The recitation at Iyomante:
Oh bear! You are of benefit to us. You give us your furn for clothing and bedding: you give us meat for food. In order to show our gratitude we shall now send you back to your own country wuth many gifts for your bear relatives. We are going to perform a variety of interesting dances with this in mind.
